The injury prevention work in ALF
Although the extent and risk of injuries in ski resorts is very modest, the accidents are no less tragic for those affected. Every accident will therefore always be one too many. This is the overall starting point for our work with ski safety.
Safety in the driveway
When it comes to the driveway (lift transport), the Norwegian Railway Inspectorate (SJT) supervises Norwegian cable cars.
When it comes to the descent, the ski resort has a responsibility to ensure that people in the resort get down safely and are not injured. However, it is important to emphasize that the skier also has a responsibility that he / she does not injure himself or herself or others by adapting the skiing according to the 10 international Skiing Rules. ALF´’s alpine rules are based on these and were revised most recently in 2016.
The Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB) is the supervisory authority and follows up the work of the ski resorts.
Causes of injuries and the injury prevention work
Our damage investigations show that the majority of the damage can be charged to the skier himself.
Most accidents are associated with own falls. The reasons are faults in the equipment, poor skills, poor physical conditions, and not least a clear neglect of the 10 Alpine Rule Rules.
The damage statistics show that only a few percent of the damage was due to a collision with an object, a cause of damage where the plant can be included in a possible discussion about a contributing cause.
Based on the above, ALF divides its injury prevention work into two main areas:
Attitude-building measures against the public to attack the main cause of the injuries.
Measures against the facilities to make these even safer.
Attitude-creating measures towards the public
Free loan of helmet
Results from surveys in Hemsedal have estimated that a large part of the head injuries could have been avoided or been less serious when wearing a helmet.
In collaboration with Gjensidige, ALF has distributed many thousands of helmets for free lending in Norwegian ski resorts. There are hundreds of thousands of “helmet days”. We also know that other insurance companies contribute positively to this work at the same time as most facilities themselves have also purchased helmets. In several facilities, children under the age of 7 drive for free using a helmet.
Our surveys show that 85% wear a helmet when skiing.
Skivett on alpine slopes
Another important injury prevention measure is information about and follow-up of the 10 international rules for Skivett in alpine slopes. Had the disc rules been followed, the number of injuries could have been significantly reduced.
The alpine weather rules also give the ski patrols the best starting point for exercising better control on the slopes. ALF has prepared a separate safety sign for terrain parks.
We have also recommended our members to check that those who snowboard have a proper leash. The catch strap must be attached to the knee and so long that the board is attached to the body when it is carried / transported.
Measures aimed at the facilities
In 1992, ALF prepared a template for a Security Plan in alpine facilities as an important tool in the injury prevention context. In the Security Plan, among other things, all the descents are drawn on a map so that all injuries can be registered where they occurred. It provides a good basis for implementing injury prevention measures based on the location of the injury, frequency of injuries and type of injuries. In addition, all security measures must be drawn in a corresponding map system.
We use every opportunity to remind member companies of the importance and importance of having their own Security Plan.
Responsibility and safety on slopes
ALF has prepared a separate booklet: “Responsibility and safety on slopes”. The booklet deals with the responsibility of both the skier and the facility owner in the marked downhill areas. Furthermore, the booklet points out which safety measures are the responsibility of the plant owner in both the marked slopes and off-piste.
Internal control system for slopes
ALF has prepared an internal control system for the descents with ongoing risk assessment as a starting point for damage prevention measures.
Safety in connection with training and running
ALF has prepared a booklet to improve safety in this area. The booklet deals with the responsibility of both the facility owner and the trainer / race organizer and what measures must be implemented to prevent accidents and injuries.
Ship patrol course
ALF has for several years conducted courses for the training of personnel for the ski patrols. The ski patrols’ tasks are both to take care of and to prevent injuries. The last task has become an increasingly important part of the ski patrols’ work. The content of the ski patrol education has been strengthened through an expansion of the course content. The course also deals with securing, marking and upholstery, which is an important part of the facility’s safety work.
